Betty Shackelford Scholarship
Betty Shackelford began her journey with Fayetteville Technical Institute in June 1974 when she served as Executive Secretary to the Dean of Instruction, Mr. William O. Cameron. Betty continued to provide administrative support to the Dean of Instruction, a position that was later held in 1982 by Dr. Larry Norris. In 1997, Dr. Norris continued to escalate in his service to the College, and continuing to stand dutifully alongside him during his ten years as College President was Betty Shackelford, serving in the role of Administrative and Executive Assistant to the President.
In 2007, Dr. Larry Keen became the fourth President of Fayetteville Technical Community College, and Betty Shackelford continued her service to the College in the role of Executive Assistant to the President. Betty retired on January 1, 2015, after completing 40 years and 7 months of service.
Betty’s knowledge of the history of Fayetteville Technical Community College was rich and meaningful because she had abundantly experienced the many facets of change and how the College was impacted throughout its history. To know Betty Shackelford was to experience the joy of having a true friend, someone who never hesitated to go the extra mile or to extend a helping hand.
Betty’s love of people was most felt by her cherished friends and family. Affectionately known as “Memaw Shack,” Betty Shackelford was completely devoted to her family.
This scholarship is for a student with a minimum 2.5 GPA enrolled in any program at FTCC.
