Esther L. Motte Memorial Scholarship
Esther L. Motte was born in Goldsboro, NC. At the age of 2, she contracted the Spanish Flu. Mrs. Motte moved to Fayetteville in 1954 with her husband and three children. Mrs. Motte enrolled at FTCC and became the oldest person to receive a high school diploma at that time in the school’s history. She later returned to FTCC and earned her credentials as a certified nursing aide. Mrs. Motte worked at HIghsmith Rainey Hospital for more than 20 years. Mrs. Motte passed in 2001 at the age of 85. Her son, Joseph Motte, was a math instructor at FTCC for more than 20 years until he retired in 2008. In 2002, Joseph established the Esther L. Motte Memorial Scholarship to honor his mother. Joseph wanted the scholarship to benefit healthcare students because of his mother’s career as a CNA and also because she benefited from the care of many nurses, some of them FTCC graduates, in her final years. Mrs. Motte’s legacy of care for others lives on through the Esther L. Motte Memorial Scholarship.
